Welcome to the Mentor 4 Moms Podcast!

On this episode:

Where there is no vision the people perish. ~Proverbs 29:18a

Creating a vision is about giving yourself permission to dream about what’s possible. A vision allows you look beyond the everyday norm to a future that gives you hope and makes you want to pursue it. Vision calls you forward, compels you to lean in, fuels you in hard times. It gives you the strength to try one more time even when you feel utterly exhausted.

Creating a vision is going to require you to invest time.If it helps to get you started, discuss what you want with your spouse or a trusted friend, mentor, or coach. Dream out loud about the 5 priority areas you manage every single day: Children, Home, Activities, Overwhelming Circumstances, Self Care. Then define where you’re headed.

When creating a vision, do it from a positive perspective. What you want instead of what you don’t want. “I want to gain enough strength and flexibility to easily walk 3 miles a day by the end of 2020.” Vs. I don’t want to keep sitting on the couch because I’m too out of shape to workout.”

Another example: instead of saying “I don’t want my bedroom to be the place the family dumps all the clutter,” create a vision of a bedroom that is a relaxing, romantic, refreshing place to be. By default the clutter is out of the picture.

Dream beyond your current circumstances. Have fun. If your vision doesn’t make you smile and get you all excited, keep at it until it does.

Usborne company, an international toy and book distributor, promotes the idea that play is work. When kids play they are learning, growing, and developing. I believe you’re never too old to stop playing. Keep play in practice. Never stop learning, growing, and developing – and do that with a sense of childlike wonder, curiosity, and delight.

Be willing to have unclear thoughts and unanswered questions. The creative process should be messy and non linear. Free yourself from the traps of perfectionism. Instead, open up to bigger possibilities ahead. Use your imagination.

As you think about what you want on your vision board, here’s a few questions for you to think about.

  • What do you enjoy?
  • How do you want to feel day-to-day?
  • What’s most important to you?
  • What images come to mind when you think about the life God most desires for you?
  • Are you most inspired by images? Words/phrases? A mixture of both?
  • Do you love lots of color? Neutrals? Black and white contrast?
  • Don’t stress over your answers. This is about getting back in touch with your own preferences. Mom life can sweep us up in such a swift current that we drift too far from any connection to our own likes and preferences. It’s time to reconnect.

Family Vision Board

I started out doing vision boards for the family. I still recommend this for anyone who needs to define their three core values. It’s a great way to have fun as you seek clarity and choose.

Reflect on the following:

  •  In 10 years, my children will be  (insert their ages), and what I want to be true for our family is….. X, Y, Z.
  • How about this one: when my kids are adults, this is what I want to be true for them financially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
  • This year (2020) our family focused on 5 yrs. Because our children are now older their lives will be drastically different in just 5 yrs vs 10.
  • Decide on the best time frame focus for your family.

Create a Vision Board

  • Define a vision board
  • Vision board details on materials etc on Episode 28
  • Don’t let perfectionism or “I’m not crafty or creative” stop you from this option
  • Keep it simple
  • Keep it fun

Take time to reflect and Journal your thoughts. This week I’m going to post a video on my website that shows you exactly how I process the images on my vision board.

  • Vision helps to build a connects today to your future
  • Vision helps us to understand that our today’s impact tomorrow.
  • Vision becomes a guide to our hopes and dreams.
  • Vision helps us to break the ordinary off our daily actions and redeem them to the rightful place of purpose.

Next time, let’s talk about how to use your vision board to create 2020 goals that both inspire and motivate you.
