I’m talking about those moments when everyone else is happy about the news, but you’re not completely ready to celebrate yet. Moments when you can feel a transition, a shift in life, and because it’s not traumatic, or ‘bad’, no one expects your feeling of sadness.

  • A move to a new city
  • Going back to work
  • Kids in a new school
  • Launching kids off to college or adult life
  • Marriage
  • News of healing of a sickness – but you mourn the years lost and the pain that still remains

You’re not trying to be a downer or dampen the celebration, but you can’t help your true feelings. What can you do?

  1. Give yourself permission to feel what you feel.
  2. Create a safe place for your feelings and invite someone to join you there when you’re ready
  3. Give yourself permission to celebrate too. We’re complicated and an emotional mixed bag, and that’s okay.
  4. Acknowledge that this will pass.
  5. Prepare that more challenge will come. But you are strong. You are loved. You can handle the highs and the lows.
